Looking for some books to read to your kids? Here are two books about fascinating ladies – both true.
(Remember, when sharing a story with kids, remind them that there are three kinds of stories … and then make sure they understand which one you’re telling.
- True accounts from the Bible.
- Made-up stories that people write (although parables are in the Bible as illustrations that the Lord used to explain a truth).
- True stories that aren’t in the Bible
One of today’s stories is a true, really happened, but not-in-the Bible story. The other is a true account from God’s Word.)
Gutsy Girls – Book Five: Sojourner Truth
By Amy L. Sullivan
Illustrated by Beverly Ann Wines
Sojourner Truth was born into a family of slaves back in the 1800s. When she was nine-years-old, she was sold to another slaveowner (without her family) along with a flock of sheep – for $100.
As an adult, she was lied to and abused. She decided to take her youngest daughter and head for freedom. With the help of a Quaker couple she escaped. She then decided to … well, I’ll let YOU read the rest of the story.
A Fearless Leader
By Rachel Spier Weaver, Anna Haggard
Illustrated by Eric Elwell
The account of Deborah is found in Judges, chapters 4 and 5. Deborah was the only female judge of Israel and she loved the Lord. This book gives the account of how she aided Barak in defeating Sisera’s army. (The Lord orchestrated the battle in a unique way.)
This is another great book to share with your kids.
