Hey! That’s My Star!

You’ve heard about them, of course. The registries that let you name a star for only $39.99. Some of your kids (either in your ministry or personal) have also heard about them because the sites advertise on TV, radio and the internet … especially around Christmas. A lot of kids enjoy learning about space, so naming your own star sounds kind of cool.

Plus, you get to actually choose the star you want to name. (Yes, you have the option.)

But there are some sky-sized problems.

First, we can only see so many stars so some of them are getting named over and over again. (The stars you name are supposed to be visible stars.)

Second, there is more than one registry so different organizations are naming the same stars.

Third, the official organization that names the stars is  the IAU.  (International Astronomical Union). But they haven’t named any new stars for a long, long time. They are the ones with the official star catalogue and none of the stars you name for $39.90 are in there.

And really no one knows how many stars there are. (The astronomers estimate that there are 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. I don’t know what that number is and they don’t know if that’s a true estimate.)

But God knows.

In fact, God DOES have names for all the stars.

Here are some verses about stars you and your kids can study together. God, the Creator of the stars, does not need a position catalog to know where each one is located in the universe. He doesn’t need graphs and charts to know how many there are. He doesn’t wonder how many are hidden from our sight here on earth.

He knows.

Genesis 1:16 – And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.

Job 9:6-8 – Who shakes the earth out of its place,
    and its pillars tremble;
who commands the sun, and it does not rise;
    who seals up the stars.
who alone stretched out the heavens
    and trampled the waves of the sea;

Psalm 8:3 –When I look at Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have set in place,

Psalm 147:4He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names.

Jeremiah 31:34 – Thus says the Lord, who gives the sun for light by day and the fixed order of the moon and the stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the Lord of hosts is His name.

He who counts the stars and calls them by name is in no danger of forgetting his own children.
